The problem is relatevely easy to solve. 
Until now, greek language had its own file of combinations for dead keys, 
specified 
in /usr/share/X11/locale/compose.dir as el_GR.UTF-8/Compose. Now the dead keys 
combinations for 
producing characters with precombined accents is incorporated into the main 
en_US.UTF-8/Compose. 
 
What needs to be done: 
1) Locate the file compose.dir 
2) change line 279 from: el_GR.UTF-8/Compose to: en_US.UTF-8/Compose 
3) Restart X server
