This happened to me as well, after installing either  from the (Kubuntu) 
repositories. I also installed Wine and tried to run some programs on it, I 
don't remember which came last. Adept manager now says it's locked out like for 
the OP. I'm completely new to Linux, so I can'¨t actually figure out what 
version of Kubuntu I have installed, but I think it's 7.04 (not sure though). 
How does one find this out?
I never noticed any crashes or anomalous behaviors before this happened. I 
haven't been able to test whether java actually works though.

I'm not entirely sure what packages I installed, is there a way to generate 
some kind of system report or something that might be of use in troubleshooting 
this?
Should I go ahead and try the sudo dpkg --configure -a command, or would it be 
useful for all the good debugging people on this forum to find out more first?
