Update: the bug is present also in Gnome, so it's a kernel issue. The lights problem is a cosmetic issue and not related with the data corruption and was discussed here: http://fcp.surfsite.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=43234&forum=11&post_id=196994.
