You can use a KDE3-style menu by right clicking on the launcher icon and
selecting "Switch to Classic Menu style".
And trust me, I share your dislike of Kickoff. I just wonder how we could
resolve this bug in Ubuntu? The very nature of Kickoff is a one-pane type of
menu, so using something else would seem to be the only way to resolve this
unless we can figure out some clever hack to fix this.

Changing the default menu for this cycle to the Classical Menu would
probably require extensive discussion and would be much debated. (In the
process making this a default-settings bug) Such a move might also be
frowned upon by upstream since they seem somewhat in love with it.

For me it's not that big of a deal. I just use plasmoid-lancelot as my
launcher, it's features are cool enough and it overcomes some of the
worst peeves I have with Kickoff enough that I don't hate it for being a
one-pane-type menu launcher. The classical menu is also available. I'm
just wondering how we would be able to resolve this bug. :-)
