I found out that this only happened when starting with the filemanagement profile. The reason was a dependency on dolphin which is not handled well. dolphin was absent. Installing dolphin fixed the problem. Ideally, konqueror would report the problem rather than hang silently consuming CPU when dolphin is not available.
