Good. With KDE 4.4 kile seems to consequently crash, so no need for you to look any further if you were using it. Kile does work for other people on Ubuntu 9.10. Try to enable apport https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport#How%20to%20enable%20apport and report the crash through it; it can generate some useful information for the crash.
