Public bug reported:

When playing a video in VLC in Kubuntu, the power management dims and
eventually turns off the screen, even when connected on AC power. This
is with default settings.

VLC has an option to "Inhibit power management daemon during playback",
which is one by default.

According to VLC developers, KDE4 broke xdg-utils compatibility:
