Hello guys,

I can quite firmly state that the problem went away here. Apparently, after
removing 'setxkbmap us' from my bashrc, the issues disappeared.

I have been using the machine for more than 48 hours now, and I still have
the Compose key working, _and_ the numkey has not switched off in all
this time.

Of course I cannot confirm this 100%, but the change is really notable.

Maybe someone coudl find a reason for setxkbmap causing this effect?
I'll leave it like this some more, then try putting it in again to check if the
problem reappears...

John
