Ok, so upon testing in a virtual machine with 64GB, I can now revise my previous test: Ubuntu Studio needs a minimum of 24.4GB to uncompress the squashfs and add a swapfile before removing ubiquity and its dependencies. With my previous test, it only had 15GB to deal with, so it was denied the required space and did not have the option to auto- resize. (see screenshot).
