9 Die in Indonesia Religious Strife
AMBON, Indonesia (AP) _ At least eight rioters and one soldier
were killed today as Indonesian marines fired on a Muslim mob
attacking a church in the eastern province of Maluku, doctors and
witnesses said.
The mob threw homemade grenades and stones as they advanced on
Silo church in Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, witnesses
said.
Marines opened fire when the mob refused to disperse. One of the
soldiers was killed in an exchange of gunfire.
Yoni Moricor, a doctor at a hospital in the Al Fatah mosque
compound, said eight bodies were brought to the hospital.
Other witnesses said the death toll could be higher but that
could not be independently confirmed.
It was the latest outbreak of religious violence in Ambon, where
a series of clashes between Muslims and Christians has left nearly
200 dead since July. Last week, at least 11 people were killed in
two separate incidents.
Unlike the violence in East Timor and other restive parts of
Indonesia, the fighting in Ambon and surrounding villages, about
1,400 miles east of Jakarta, is based on religious rivalry rather
than issues of separatism.
