With kvm-56, running:

qemu-img: Alternative compatibility level not supported for this file format
Looking at the source of qemu-img.c, there is an obvious bug at line 474 (if
the usage text is to be trusted):
if (flags & BLOCK_FLAG_COMPRESS && drv != &bdrv_vmdk)
error("Alternative compatibility level not supported for this file format");
This should probably be BLOCK_FLAG_COMPAT6.
