Okay, sometimes you just have to keep drilling the customer for more info
until something gives. I went to site today to try to find this elusive
reboot-causing noise. I asked the homeowner again where he hears it and
when, and after telling me the same thing he's been telling me for days, he
added a detail that he had previously missed. He said 'I can go into the
closet where the [KSU] is and hear a squealing noise that just goes on and
on.', at which point I asked 'do you mean from the battery backup [UPS]? Of
course, he didn't even know what that was, and it turns out that the battery
is about 12 years old. A new UPS and we've not had a call yet! Tomorrow will
tell, but it makes perfect sense that the power was becoming intermittent at
random times of the day/night, and the system was just doing what it always
does when it reboots, just in rapid succession! So, after you have all
finished rolling your eyes back into your heads, know this - that no matter
how strange the problem, there's ALWAYS an explanation, and more often than
not, it's pretty darn simple.
