I have been in touch with an attorney in another state whose client has a
KXTD1232 with presumably a TVS digital voicemail although we did not have
the exact model number for the vm.

Back in 1999 this client had numerous calls coming into their 800 toll free
number during the night, and at the same time, numerous international calls
were being placed, usually to India or Pakistan or that area. (So it's not
the Philippine hacker). The calls amount to a very very substantial sum of
money that the long distance company doesn't want to swallow.

The local tech provided the attorney with some info:
The system does not have a DISA card.
After it was first discovered, all long distance calls were blocked on all
ports yet the calls still got through later.
The tech says he found nothing odd in the system programming (???).

The incoming calls to the 800 number were from out of state payphones, so
presumably no one had access to the premises to rewire anything or reprogram
the systems.
They have Bell South EssX (?) type service which I do not know much about
except that it is supposed to be something similar to Centrex (anyone with a
better explanation?).

It is suspected that the perpetrators got in on the toll free line and
forced the system to either pass a flash back to the line and dial
internationally, or pass them through to a second line to allow making
calls.

The questions are:
1. Can something be done remotely on these ESSX lines to allow that?
2. Can the TVS do it?
3. ?

I know how to make the TVS pass a hookflash back to a centrex line for
automatic off-site transfer but as far as I know that can only be done
through terminal programming.
The KXT can call forward an extension to a co, but again, that has to be
done on-site.
Apparently, whatever was done was done remotely.

Any thoughts or clues on this would be appreciated!

Thanks
Charles Patterson
