We have been using them for years at Bell Atlantic/Verizon.  The gel will prevent connection of the mod plug about 30-50% of the time out of the box (lots of repeats on new installations).  I have seen them corrode also.  They may be of some help, but they are by no means fool-proof....
We usually dig out most of the gel with an orange stick before installation to cut back on repeats........
