OK, I will try getchar and the "hex scanf" (instead of
the decimal version), though one would think the result
would be the same, especially as I got the same result
with std::cin as with scanf.

Good point - I run qemu ('make qemu') in a Linux VT, on
top of tmux. I don't recognize the 'unknown command'
error message from my daily (nightly) activity so my
bet is it has something to do with qemu. But let me try
it in xterm as well.
