KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Assembly Member Cindy Montanez (D-39th)
The Womens Commission of the League of United Latin American
Citizens (LULAC) joined by the San Fernando Valley/Northeast Los Angeles
and San Gabriel Valley/Whittier Chapters of the National Organization for
Women (NOW) are launching a Southern California Womens Issues Forum on
January 15, 2005 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Cesar Chavez Park, 401 Golden
Ave, Long Beach. The forum will address issues in Education, Healthcare,
Economic Security, Teen Pregnancy, Gang Violence, Employment, Business and
Pay Equity Issues.
The keynote speaker kicking off the event will by Assembly Member
Cindy Montanez who heads the powerful Assembly Rules Committee who was
recently awarded the SFV/NELA NOW Chapter's Certificate of Achievement for
fighting for stricter workplace regulations to combat on the job harassment
and discrimination. Other elected officials who will be participating in
the conference include Long Beach City Council Members Tonia Reyes Uranga
and Bonnie Lowenthal, and Los Angeles Community College Trustee Nancy
Pearlman.
Other panel members include Benetta Johnson, President of the
Alameda Corridor Jobs Coalition who will address employment issues and
Sharon Clanton with a comprehensive study of the controversy surrounding
hundreds of murders in Ciudad Juarez in Mexico.
A donation is requested of attendees to cover the costs of lunch
and facilities, but nobody will be turned away due to lack of funds. For
