For immediate release: Abram Friedman Occupational Center has just been forced to cut, transfer or reduce hours on more than 20 teacher assignments because of misallocation and mismanagement of the budget by the Division of Adult & Career Education (DACE) in Los Angeles Unified School District. In response, chapter leaders of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), along with other concerned teachers, students and community members, are holding a press conference at their school, 1646 S. Olive Street, Los Angeles 90015 (corner of Venice Boulevard) on Friday morning, March 18 at 11:15 AM. "This is the latest salvo in an on-going attack on adult and occupational education," said Michael Novick, UTLA Chapter Co-Chair and a member of the teacher union's House of Representatives. "We are calling on the Division of Adult and Career Education of LAUSD to open its books, because we believe that these damaging cuts are the result of diverting funds from schools, classrooms and students to central office administration and sinecure positions. We will not accept these cuts into the muscle and bone of adult education offerings in a city with such a great need for the services we offer."
The union points out that matters will only worsen if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's "education reforms" and Pres. George W. Bush's domestic budget cuts go through -- including defunding of vocational education and the "Carl Perkins" assistance program for schools with large numbers of low income students developing occupational skills. "Throughout the Division, adult/occupational education teachers have been losing hours, assignments and as a result even their already minimal health care benefits," said Novick. He pointed out that payroll costs for credentialed personnel (teachers) already form a smaller percentage of the budget in the Division of Adult & Career Education (DACE), than in LAUSD as a whole.
