Dear Friend, Please join us next weekend at the Central American Culturathon, which will be held at California State University, Northridge, April 15th and 16th. The event culminates on Saturday evening with a screening of the documentary, Reel Encounters, about our collaborative project with Korean teens. The whole weekend will be a glorious celebration of the power of youth using media for good. This event is co-sponsored by the Central American Studies Program at CSUN and our program, the Teen International Media Exchange (T.I.M.E.) at Cleveland High. The T.I.M.E. Program is now in its 3rd year. Its primary mission is to help young people learn to resolve cultural conflicts by collaborating on video projects that, ultimately, serve as bridges across continents. Our young students (aged 14 - 18) are using their time and talent to make a difference in the world. This Culturathon will help us extend our studies about Central America to the entire community, with something for the entire family. Friday night focuses on the college and teen crowd with a coffee house, live artists, Salsa lessons, live bands and spoken word artists. Saturday is an all-day event for the family, with performances and storytelling in the beautiful CSUN Performing Arts Center. This is a great opportunity to bring the joy, vibrancy and traditions of Latin America to a larger audience. Saturday morning, CSUN Central American professor Dr. Douglas Carranza will screen Maria's Story, Pamela Cohen's documentary about a thirty-nine-year old mother of three who was a leader in the guerrilla movement during the war in El Salvador. On Saturday afternoon, we have a number of dance performances and a fashion show. At 4:30 PM Alfonso Arau, the famed Mexican director (Like Water for Chocolate, A Walk in the Clouds), will be showing some clips of his upcoming movie Zapata, as well as clips from his other movies. He'll be interviewed by Michael Donnelly, an expert in Latin American cinema. At 7:30, we'll be screening the documentary which follows our first international exchange with Korean high school students. Shot mostly in Seoul, Reel Encounters shows the struggles and triumphs of "kim chi, hip hop and the cultural divide."
