We learned this morning that Senator John Isakson (R-GA) is intending to offer the REAL ID Act as an amendment to the appropriation bill. Although the situation regarding immigration-relation provisions remains fluid, it now appears that Senator Isakson will get a vote on REAL ID unless he withdraws his amendment. This vote could happen as soon as this evening. Given this new information, it important that you contact your Senators to urge them to oppose this ill-conceived bill. Contact your Senators through the Congressional switchboard (202-224-3121). You can also find phone numbers on the Senate Web site at: _http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm_ (http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm) If you phone them, please clearly state that you urge your Senator to oppose the REAL ID if it comes to the floor. If they ask you to clarify your opposition, note that the Senate has held no hearings on this radical bill that would: � Prevent people fleeing persecution from obtaining relief; � Make our highways more dangerous and undermine our security; � Impose guilt by association � Restrict judicial review for the first time since the Civil War, barring the court doors to immigrants; � Waive all laws related to construction of fences at our borders, thereby granting unprecedented authority to a federal agency; � Grant authority to bail bondsman that should be given only to agents of our government.
