Towelhead
Erian's book of short stories, The Brutal Language of Love, was a huge
hit here, often recommended to future followers with a wink and head bow of
reverence. Her stories have become legendary for their insight, feeling, craft,
humor, and subtlety. Her first novel takes place in 1991 when pubescent Jasira
is sent to live with her Lebanese father in a tract housing development. The
first Gulf War is on and her neighbor is a reservist who can't keep his hands
off her. As good as Bank's Rule of the Bone, as classic as Blume's Are You
There God? It's Me, Margaret. (Simon and Schuster)
