ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
FILM: ARLINGTON WEST (excerpted)
with FILMMAKERS: PETER DUDAR & SALLY MARR
Artists and anti-war activists Peter & Sally made this compelling
documentary at the "temporary cemetery" erected on Sundays in Santa
Monica
by Veterans for Peace, a tribute to the fallen soldiers in Iraq. Through
a
sequence of moving interviews, the film captures the troubled faces,
poignant conversations, and powerful silences of soldiers, military
families, veterans, & friends who stand before this ocean of 1600+
crosses
in the sand. The film brings home how real are those who have died and
those
who survive and how high is the cost of war. Says one viewer, "For the
living, this film asks, 'How could this have happened? For the dead, it
asks, 'Why?'"
SPEAKER: FERNANDO SUAREZ DEL SOLAR
In 2003, Fernando's son Jesus was killed in Iraq when he stepped on a US
cluster bomb. Since then, Fernando has been speaking against the war.
"The
true soldier defends the Constitution, life, liberty, and democracy," he
says, "and does not exterminate a foreign land for economic gain."
Fernando
has traveled to Iraq with Global Exchange, met with members of Congress,
the
UN, and the media, and speaks actively for Military Families Speak Out.
His
great passion is working with young people, especially the low-income
Latino
youth targeted by the military recruiters. "America doesn't need more
heroes," says Fernando. "It needs more students."
SPEAKER: TIM GOODRICH
Although Tim joined the Air Force to defend his country, he was serving
in
the Middle East when he realized the war was wrong. Discharged in 2003,
he
joined the anti-war movement, visited Iraq with Global Exchange, and
came
home to co-found Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). "The troops over
there need someone to fight for them." he says, "fight to bring them
home so
that no more people have to die for a lie..."
SPEAKER: ARLENE INOUYE
A teacher at Roosevelt High, Arlene is active in the Coalition Against
Militarism In Our Schools (CAMS). CAMS provides resources & advocacy to
counter military recruiters and encourages students to find peaceful
options
to military service. Arlene says, "We want kids to make the choices they
want, but we want them to have information about many future
opportunities
like college, scholarships and jobs."
SPEAKER: JIM LAFFERTY
Jim is Executive Director of the L.A. chapter of the National Lawyers
Guild
& host of KPFK 's "The Lawyers Guild." An anti-war activist, Jim
increasingly is being asked for legal expertise on such military issues
as
selective service registration, opt-out policies, military recruiting,
release from delayed enlistments, conscientious objectors status,
resistance
by those in the service, and refusal to return to active duty.
