Earthworks Farm Project - ORGANIC farming
( you can help)

EarthWorks Enterprises is a job training
and leadership development program for
youth who are employed to grow and sell
organic produce. We are preparing our
4 acre site for cover crop planting.
Connie Yost, founder of Earthworks,
has planted the seeds for a production farm
for at risk youth on four acres of
Whittier Narrows.

Please contact Connie for more information
and to verify schedule before
attending and to find out what to bring.

Come when you can, for as long as you can.
Bring hat, gloves, water, lunch, mosquito
repellent (not necessary for most people--we
don`t have a lot of bugs).

Our farm is located in South El Monte in the
Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, just north
of the 60 freeway at Santa Anita exit, behind
the Ramada Inn. Park in the Narrows parking lot,
  not at the Ramada.

Fabulous, uplifting program on PBS (KCET)

THE NEW HEROES is a four-hour series, hosted
by Robert Redford, which tells the dramatic
stories of social entrepreneurs around the world
who bring innovative, empowering solutions
to the most intractable social problems around
  the world.

Each story in this unique series illustrates
the amazing changes that are possible when
an innovative idea is coupled with optimism,
a strategy for action, and a passionate belief
in human potential

Sample episodes:

Fabio Rosa of Brazil is using technology
and new approaches to bring electricity
to remote regions of Brazil.
------------------
Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy and American,
David Green, use what Green terms "compassionate
capitalism" to give sight and hearing back to millions
of people who would otherwise be blind and deaf.

Green was inspired by Dr. V.'s belief that
humans were put on Earth not get to rich,
but to serve.

He noticed that the number of surgeries
Dr. V. could perform was limited by the
high cost of replacement lenses $150.00 a pair.

When Green discovered that the actual cost
of making the lenses could, with a creative
approach, be reduced to just $10.00 a pair,
he convinced Dr. V. to open a lens factory.

Now 100,000 poor people a year regain
their eyesight free of charge !

>FILM: "System Failure: Violence,
Abuse and Neglect in the CYA -
California Youth Authority"
(2004, 50 minutes)
with special guest from "Books not Bars"

Juvenile justice in California is a national
embarrassment, a statewide disaster
and a source of rich profit for a small
number of entrenched interests.

At the center of this issue is the
California Youth Authority (CYA),
the formal prison system for youths
in California.

Presently, the CYA is composed of eight
institutions housing more than 4,000 youth.
Stories have been emerging for decades of
rampant human rights violations of youths
imprisoned in the CYA–violations that include
sexual abuse, beatings, forced medication
and systemic medical and educational neglect.

This film exposes the failures of the CYA through
the stories of the children and families caught in
the machinery of California`s juvenile prisons.

ARTICLE:

Microcredit and microfinance have changed the
lives of people and revitalized communities in the
world's poorest and also the richest countries.
We have seen the enormous power that access
to even modest financial services can bring people.
With access to a range of financial tools, families can
invest according to their own priorities school fees,
health care, business, nutrition or housing:

BOLIVIA: Microcredit loan clients doubled their income
in two years, according to the Global Development
Research Center. Clients were also more likely to access
health care for themselves and their families, and more
likely to send their children to school.

BANGLADESH: 48 per cent of the poorest households
with access to microcredit loans rose above the poverty line.

BRAZIL: An estimated 15.7 million people in Brazil work
in the informal economy as micro-entrepreneurs outnumbering
formal sector entrepreneurs by more than three to one, according
to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Of these
informal micro-entrepreneurs, 93 per cent run profitable businesses.

INDONESIA: Borrowers of microcredit at Bank Rakyat in Indonesia
increased their incomes by 12.9 per cent compared to increases of
3 per cent in the control group. Another study on Bank Rakyat
borrowers on the island of Lombok in Indonesia reports that the
average incomes of clients had increased by 112 per cent and
that 90 per cent of households had moved out of poverty.

INDIA: Three-fourths of clients who participated in the
programmes of SHARE in India for over an extended
period of time saw significant improvements in their
economic well-being and half of the clients graduated out
of poverty. There was also a marked shift in employment
patterns of clients from irregular, low-paid daily labour to
diversified sources of earnings, increased employment of
family members, and a strong reliance on small business.
