Opening New Vistas

As Malcolm X said, “I have often reflected upon the new vistas that
reading opened to me. I knew right there in prison that reading had
changed forever the course of my life.” The book sale will provide that
opportunity by offering political and cultural titles not readily
available, including pamphlets (50 cents) and thousands of books (most
$1 or $2) on political theory, socialism, African-American studies, and
more, many drawn from a huge private collection recently given to the
Library. To further open new perspectives, on Saturday, July 30, at 2
p.m. Regina Freer, associate professor of politics at Occidental
College, will discuss The Next Los Angeles, which combines history,
analysis, strategy, and a platform for building a just and livable
city. She will also sign the book, which will be available for sale.
The schedule on Sunday, July 31, will feature music and art. Free ice
cream and other refreshments will also be offered both days.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Library, a social justice
people’s library located in South Los Angeles. The Library was founded
over 40 years ago and is dedicated to education for social change. For
more information about the Library or the event, go to www.socallib.org
or call (323) 759-6063.
