C I S P E S ALERT ~~~~ The House of Representatives began debate on CAFTA [Central American Free Trade Agreement] at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time today, Wednesday. The So. California Coalition to Stop CAFTA, the Central American community and all allies who have worked so hard to defeat CAFTA are now on high alert. ~~~~ Our anti-CAFTA forces will hold a vigil tonight, Wednesday, at La Placita Church across from Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles, monitoring the debate and waiting for the vote. La Placita is on Main Street, a block south of Sunset/Cesar Chavez. Four long years of organizing and struggle come down to the House CAFTA vote tonight or tomorrow. Join us there!~~~~ We were delighted to hear late this afternoon that Congresswoman Susan Davis [D-CA] of San Diego, a major target of our recent work, announced she will vote against CAFTA. Really good news! Others we have focused on are coming out against CAFTA. Republicans want only two or three hours of debate on CAFTA before a vote and the House Democrats are insisting on a much longer debate. The first House vote tonight will determine the length of the debate. Vigils are taking place in El Salvador tonight--- and throughout Central America and in the Domincan Republic--- waiting for the House vote. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard to defeat this hideous trade bill. La Lucha Continua!
