For Immediate Release

ACTION ALERT: ASK THE DOJ TO DROP ALL CHARGES AGAINST AL-ARIAN !

Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, congratulates
Palestinian Professor Sami Al-Arian and co-defendants Sameeh Hammoudeh,
Ghassan Zayed and Hatem Naji Fariz on the news yesterday that they were
acquitted of key charges after a lengthy trial and thirteen days of
deliberation by a federal jury. We also congratulate the defendants'
families who have
suffered immensely during this ordeal.

Many innocent Arabs have been targeted by the U.S. government since
September 11, 2001 often under the powers of the so-called Patriot Act.
The acquittals yesterday represent a renewal of faith in the jury
system, where average Americans were clearly able to see past the
suffocating volume of propaganda directed against Al-Arian and the other
co-defendants.

Professor Al-Arian was found not guilty of eight of the 17 counts
brought against him and the jury was deadlocked on the other counts.
Co-defendants Sameeh Hammoudeh and Ghassan Zayed Ballut were acquitted
of all charges against them. Hatem Naji Fariz was found not guilty of 24
counts and jurors deadlocked on the remaining eight.

Professor Al-Arian and Hatem Naji Fariz are now waiting in prison while
the Department of Justice prosecutors decide whether or not they wish to
go to trial again on the charges on which the jury deadlocked. These
charges are based on those of which the co-defendants were found not guilty.

We ask all people of conscience to write and call Attorney General,
Alberto Gonzales at the Department of Justice to demand that the
government drop all charges and free Dr. Al-Arian and Hatem Naji Fariz
forthwith. The defendants and their families have suffered for far too
long and must be allowed to get on with their lives.

E-MAIL, CALL and WRITE Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales

12/8: URGENT ACTION ALERT: Disastrous Immigration Bill Vote

Sarah Rose Weinman
Policy and Program Liaison
Midwest Immigrant & Human Rights Center
www.mihrc.org <http://www.mihrc.org/>

Dear colleagues,
Yesterday, Representative Sensenbrenner introduced the "Border
Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act"
(H.R.4437) in the House Judiciary Committee, which he chairs. This bill
will have a sweeping and devastating effect on all immigrants, refuges,
and asylum seekers, drastically increasing the number of individuals
subjected to detention and deportation and eroding due process rights.
This is is as bad, or worse, than the 1996 legislation and REAL ID and
it is moving fast.
**Please drop whatever you are doing and take action. There is nothing
more important right now if we want to keep immigrants out of detention
and protect their basic rights.**
The Committee is expected to vote on this bill tomorrow, Thursday,
December 8th, at 10 am EST. The version passed by the Committee will
then appear for a vote before the House.

NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE WORST PROVISIONS OF THIS
BILL ARE AMELIORATED BEFORE IT GOES TO THE FULL HOUSE.

What you can do:
<>Take a stand against this pernicious legislation. Call members of the
House Judiciary Committee (listed below) TODAY and urge them to vote
against the bill. Circulate this email widely and get your colleagues,
friends, and family to call today.
<>
<>Among numerous other provisions, the bill:
<>* Expands the expedited removal program
<>* Drastically expands the definition of an aggravated felony<>
deportable offense).
<>* Requires mandatory detention for all immigrants apprehended at<>
ports of entry or along international borders until removal or a final<>
decision in their case.
<>* Sets a minimum bond of $5,000 for anyone with a Notice to<> Appear.
<>* Overturns the Supreme Court ' s ruling in Zadvydas which<> limits
long-term detention.
<>* Renders immigrants affiliated with gangs deportable and<>
inadmissible, mandates their detention, bars them from asylum or
Temporary Protected Status; gives the AG authority to designate gang
members for immigration purposes.
* Limits immigrants ' access to the circuit courts by creating a
special review process for federal court appeals of immigration cases.
And there is more.
How to call:
* All House Judiciary Committee members are listed below. Please
call as many Committee members as you can before Thursday 10am eastern.
* Note that your call will have more sway if the member is your
representative (or represents a district where your clients or their
families live), but we need to flood the lines for everyone right now.
*    State that:
- I am against H.R. 4437, the "Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and
Illegal Immigration Control Act"
- This is unecessary legislation and skirts around the need for true
immigration reform.
- The past decade has shown that strengthened enforcement alone has not
worked.
- This bill erodes the rights of the most vulnerable
- I urge you to oppose H.R. 4437 during tomorrow's mark up in the
Judiciary Committee, and in particular to oppose Titles II ("Combatting
Alien Smuggling and Illegal Entry and Presence"), IV ("Detention and
Removal"), VI ("Terrorist and Criminal Aliens"), and VIII
("ImmigrationLitigation Abuse Reduction").
