On the same day as Federal agents raided and arrested activists in a number of cities nationwide under charges of ecoterrorism, High School students were pulled from class and questioned about their association with a group opposing expansion of a ski area on the San Francisco Peaks, sacred to Hopi, Dine'/Navajo and other N AZ tribes. Posters advertising a documentary were torn down by gang task force police as propaganda promoting anarchism and a screening of the documentary on campus was cancelled for not being a balanced view of the issue (even though it had already been shown at the school months before). One wonders whether the business interests of the AZ Snow Bowl are trumping the free speech and rights to association of young citizens.

If anything, the group's activity is a responsible training of young people to recognize their constitutionally protected rights to engage in free speech, organize, petition and peacefully protest and the Gang Task Force's reaction smacks of repression of the student's civil rights and suppression of the movement to block the Snow Bowl expansion, therefore favoring the Snow Bowl's business over basic civil liberties. YOTPC members were called into the school office and questioned by the Gang Task Force. Many of the students were quite shaken after the Gang Task Force's aggressive questioning. Bowing under FPD pressure, CHS administration has cancelled tomorrow night's showing of The Snow Bowl Effect. The Gang Task Force tore down YOTPC posters advertising the showing of the documentary movie and Saturday night's benefit concert at the Hive. These posters had been pre-approved by the school administration. FPD has confiscated the posters and is "holding them as evidence." The Snow Bowl Effect, which analyzes the effect of the ski resorts proposed expansion to the environment, Native American tribes, and the local economy of Flagstaff, was shown at the school last year. Youth of the Peaks Coalition will hold a press conference today at 2:30 at Cedar and West, across from Coconino High School. Support YOTPC by attending Saturday's Benefit Concert at the Hive at 6:30. The Hive is located at 319 S. San Francisco, on the corner of Dupont. Yesterday The Catalyst, an infoshop in Prescott was raided by the FBI This follwing article is from Arizona indymedia: - - - Breaking News: Agents Raid The Catalyst Wednesday, Flagstaff Youth Questioned More than a dozen FBI agents, along with Joint Terrorism Taskforce and local police spent Wednesday afternoon and evening raiding The Catalyst Infoshop in Prescott. Agents detained one of the Catalyst's founders, who is expected to be arraigned in Flagstaff at 10:00 am Thursday at the federal building, 200 N. San Francisco. As of 8:00 pm Wednesday night, the The Catalyst was still sealed off and full of federal agents. A lot of materials have been seized. The extent of the damage and seizures is not yet known. Collective members plan to open the space again as soon as possible. Support will be needed for the arrestee and this important community center. The Catalyst Infoshop served as an organizing hub for Save the Peaks during October and November while a trial was held in Prescott (AZ IMC: 1, 2, 3 ) where several Native American tribes were suing Coconino National Forest. The warrant issued at the Catalyst also had people's names from other states. What about on-campus military recruiting (required by law in order for schools to get federal funding), televised and printed advertising and the myriad of other propagandistic messages inundating today's students both on and off campus? Including Snow Bowl advertising? What happened to a pluralistic and free speech approach to ideas in the schools and in the public commons of the media?
