The New Students for a Democratic Society will be having its first Los
Angeles meeting

Saturday. February 11.
1 PM
Peace Center,
8124 West 3rd St. Los Angeles.
Just west of Crescent Heights, (west of La Brea.)

You can call me at 818 782 1412 for further info. (Im just one of a number
of folks calling this first meeting).

This meeting is open to all, you don't have to be a student, there is
actually a related group called Movement for a Democratic Society which can
also be developed.

This is just may attitude but I suggest anyone attending be interested in
building this new effort rather than trying to used it for ones or any
particular agenda. The group has to be built first and have some internal
integrity before it can start to develop effective actions and programs.

And I would suggest it stay away from the regular laundry list of
progressive and left slogans. No one else cares about these. One of our
ideas was to first relate to people where they are at, rather than making
them first sign off on our ideas.

Very briefly, SDS was formed in the early Sixties as an off shot of the
League for Industrial Democracy, which was a part of the Socialist Movement
at the time.

It came to prominence in 1965 by holding the first large national anti-war
demonstration in Washington DC.

One of its founding principles was "participatory democracy", which meant
that we all get to participate in the decisions that affect our
lives, rather than voting every 4 years and letting others make those
decisions.

It became a radical activist group, doing the most bold and innovation
actions and programs of the Sixties.

It held, for the most part, its democratic underpinnings in is own meetings
and actions.

It became one of the most powerful groups of the Sixties, with over 100,000
official members and at least 1,000,000 participants in it's actions and
programs.
