Hula Girls, Imagining Paradise is having its North America premiere at
the Pan African Film Festival on Feb. 13 and Feb. 17. Hula Girls is a
new documentary about the depiction of Polynesian women in explorers'
logs, literature, painting and the movies. Ed Rampell, "the people's
film historian," appears in Hula Girls, will participate in Q&As after
both PAFF screenings, and is available now for interviews.20

Hula Girls is an Australian co-production that includes clips from films
about Pacific Islanders shot in Hollywood studios and on location in the
South Pacific, such as Tabu, Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando and
Tarita and Blue Hawaii with Elvis. Rampell discusses South Seas
celluloid sexual stereotypes in Hula Girls and in the post-screening
Q&As. Rampell co-wrote with Luis Reyes Made In Paradise, Hollywood's
Films of Hawaii and the South Seas and Pearl Harbor in the Movies, and
lived in Tahiti, Samoa, Hawaii and Micronesia for 20-plus years. Rampell

is also author of the 2005 book Progressive Hollywood, A People's Film
History of the United States

Hula Girls is directed by Australian filmmaker Trevor Graham, who
directed films about Aussie Communists, 1984's Red Matildas, and
Australian Aborigines, 1997's Mabo: Life of an Island Man. Although
there have been various studies about how other groups, such as Blacks
and gays, have been depicted onscreen, Hula Girls is the most
comprehensive film ever about the South Seas Cinema film genre. The Pan
African Film Festival is held annually in L.A. during Black History
Month and regularly features films featuring Pacific Islanders.
