HISPANIC CIVIL RTS GROUP GEARS
UP FOR ACTIONS THROUGHOUT STATE

LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), the largest and
oldest Latino Civil Rights Organization held two huge events this weekend
in celebration of its 77 years in existence and is preparing to challenge
anti- immigration sentiment in Costa Mesa, CA, according to Angel G.
Luévano LULAC State Director. On Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18
the California LULAC Women's Commission held its 4th Annual Women's Summit
at Southwestern College - Chula Vista Campus, California and the greater
San Diego Area.

Attendees at the two day event heard Senator Liz Figueroa, District
10; Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny, District 40; Assembly member Lori
Saldana, District 76, Mayor Jerry Sanders - San Diego, California; Mayor
Steve Padilla City of Chula Vista; Councilmember, Patricia Chavez, and
Former City Councilmember, Mary Salas, exhort women to seek appointments to
Boards and Commissions; and learned how to author legislation in areas of
education, healthcare, and immigration reform.

In addition, Gabriel Lemus, National LULAC Director of Policy and
Legislation, Margie Moran, National Vice President for Women, Angie Garcia,
National Vice President for the Elderly, and numerous State leaders from
LULAC participated at the Summit. Expert panelists conducted workshops on
Violence Against Women and Organizing for Peace; Pursuing the Virtual
Office through online learning and starting careers in Nanotechnology.

In Concord, California LULAC held an Education Summit to address
staggering Latino failure rates and California's exit exam and other
education issues impacting Latino students in California Schools. The
Education Summit included School District Officials and Education
Administrators and Community Leaders.

"Education is the premier Civil Rights Issue facing Latinos in the
21st Century," said Luévano. "We must stay vigilant making sure that our
students are taught correctly, are prepared academically, and can compete
in America and globally. Our community will be a majority in many American
workplaces by 2010. "We can ill afford not to be prepared," Luévano
continued.

In Costa Mesa, California, LULAC is preparing to join an economic
boycott of local businesses and city officials who espouse anti immigrant
sentiment support racism and back the so-called minutemen. "We must meet
and stop racism wherever it raises its ugly head," said Luévano. In
preparation, the LULAC Civil Rights Commission is in the process of
obtaining the Statements of Economic Interest and campaign reporting forms
for the three Costa Mesa City Council members who voted to force their
police department to enforce immigration laws-a move denounced by the
Police Chief and the officers' union. The documents have been sought under
the California Public Records Act so that supporters of the council
majority can be targetted for boycott if they do not end their support of
those officials.
