South Central Farmers Support Coalition & "Friends of the Farm" Help Us Save the Largest Urban Farm in the U.S. Action Alert Week of 2/20/06-2/26/06 For background and further information on the South Central Farm visit: www.southcentralfarmers.com. Special Note: We wanted to thank everyone who came to city hall early last Friday morning (2/17/06) to show their support for the South Central Farm. At least 400 supporters were outside city hall that morning, demanding the mayor do something immediately to save the farm!! An update on last Friday's actions follows this alert. Actions: 1 Write a letter to the editor of the LA Times 2 - Call Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa 3 Join us at the Farm Sunday (2/26/06) for Seeds of Knowledge 1 Write a letter to the editor of the LA Times An article appeared in the Sunday (2/19) edition of the Los Angles Times called Tall, Green, Vital: L.A. as Mayor Dreams It. Let's send in as many letters as possible saying that if the mayor really cares so much about greening L.A. he should be using his time to save the amazing community resource and already existing green space that is the South Central Farm (see below for sample letter). Remember, the more we send in the more likely they are to print one or more of them on the issue and the letters to the editor are in one of the most widely read sections of the newspaper. Letters should be no more than two short paragraphs and must include valid mailing address and telephone number and can be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The article can be viewed at http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/la-me-mayorcity19feb19,1,7631290.story. 2 - Call Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Continue calls to the office this week. Demand that the mayor publicly address the South Central Farm crisis in a town hall meeting laying out how the city plans to save this incredible community resource and green space. Demand that he fulfill his promises to Green L.A. by protecting this incredible community resource. Two weeks ago when we began this call-in campaign it took only three days before the mayor was asked on live television about the farm and was forced to break his silence on the issue. His response was horrible but it was the first time in several years he even mentioned the farm. We need to keep the pressure on! Contact Mayor Antonio Villariagosa Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Phone: (213)978-0600 3 Join us at the Farm Sunday (2/26/06) for Seeds of Knowledge From 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm come to the farm for music from Quinto Sol, Myka Nyne, Abstract Rude and many others. Enjoy the music as well as garden tours, kids art workshops, food, vendors and more. (No drugs or alcohol) Come experience the 14 acre farm for yourself and be a part of a movement to save this remarkable place. $10 suggested donation (all proceeds to the farm) Sample Letter to the Editor: In response to Tall, Green, Vital: L.A. as Mayor Dreams It in 2/19/06 edition: To: LA Times In the article "Tall, Green, Vital: L.A. as Mayor Dreams It" appearing in the February 19 edition of the Times Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa puts forward a vision of a greener Los Angeles that works better for the people who live here. If this truly is his vision why is he currently standing by and doing nothing while one rich developer, Ralph Horowitz, attempts to destroy the 13- year old South Central Farm? At 41st and Alameda the 14-acre farm provides a small plot of land to over 350 local low-income families who use these plots to fresh healthy food and medicinal herbs for their families that would not be affordable otherwise. Mr. Villaraigosa, grand visions that may or may not come true are all fine and good but you have the opportunity right now to ensure that this incredible community resource is not destroyed because of the greed of one man and the cowardice of city officials. Sincerely, Jon Doe Address + phone number -Remember: letters should be no more than two short paragraphs and must include valid mailing address and telephone number and can be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Report from Friday 2/17 Demonstration at City Hall: We wanted to thank everyone who came to city hall early last Friday morning (2/17/06) to show their support for the South Central Farm. At least 400 supporters were outside city hall that morning, demanding the mayor do something immediately to save the farm. Many went into the City Council meeting to testify before the Council about the issue. There was also a press conference and many print, radio and television reporters were there covering the event. Many musicians and the lively spirit everyone brought made the event fun as well as important. We are planning further demonstrations in the future! Also that morning Mayor Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at a conference on asthma in Los Angeles at the Biltmore Hotel. His address was interrupted by several protesters demanding that if he supports community health and reducing air pollution why is he allowing the farm to be destroyed and a warehouse and the hundreds of trucks a day to service that warehouse be put in its place in an already extremely polluted area of Los Angeles. They then chanted "Food Not Warehouses, Save the Farm". Much of the crowd broke out into spontaneous applause at the action showing Villaraigosa that even in this more main! stream crowd there is strong support for the farm. _______________________________________________ Southcentralfarmers mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.electrolandia.com/mailman/listinfo/southcentralfarmers --------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digest: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Help: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive1: <http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive2: <http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yahoo!
