To: Interested listener-sponsors and community members:
Would you like to help shape the programming on KPFK?
We need interested listeners to help evaluate the current programs and to
help develop or look over proposals for new shows.
The KPFK Program Council, an elected group of listeners and staff which
advises station management, is establishing committees to evaluate existing
programming on the listener-sponsored Pacifica radio station, KPFK 90.7 FM
Los Angeles, 98.7 FM Santa Barbara, radio powered by the people. We are
also developing committees to solicit or develop new programs that address
currently unmet needs or under-served communities.
We are setting up the following committees right now:
1. Advisory evaluation committees for existing programs:
a. News
b. Health/Spirituality/Religion
c. Late night
d. P. M. Drive time public affairs
2. Advisory evaluation committee on new program proposals:
a. Asian communities and Asian languages broadcasts
b. Science, Technology, and the Environment
c. Long form audio documentary specials
d. Atheist, Free-thought and Secular Humanist
e. L. A. Communities spotlight/showcase programming
f. Pacifica Race & Nationality Policy, Diversity issues
We are especially seeking input from people of color, women and young people.
If you'd like to serve on one of these committees, check out the details
below on the requirements and service. Then send or bring your application
to the Program Council at KPFK, 3729 Cahuenga Blvd. West, North Hollywood,
CA 91604. Include your name, address and telephone number, your email
address if you have one, the best time(s) to reach you, and a brief
explanation of your qualifications.
Specify which committee you are volunteering for. Your application should
be in our hands by May 22.
Thanks for your interest and support. We hope you will come work with us!
Meetings of the Program Council take place the last Monday of the month
(unless a holiday interferes) at 7:00 PM at the station, and are open to
interested listener-sponsors and members of the public. Time is reserved
for listener comment on every agenda.
Sincerely,
Michael Novick, Chair
for the KPFK interim Program Council
Addendum: Further details on membership requirements and expectations:
For each of these committees, we are seeking at least three community
members to join elected members of the Program Council (listeners and paid
or unpaid station staff). Additional advisory committees will be
established at a later date. If there is an area you would like to propose
or serve on that is not listed here, please send us your suggestions.
Participation on a committee would involve a commitment to meetings over
the course of only about three months, and some additional time on
evaluation, outreach, etc.
Members of advisory program evaluation committees would be provided with
CDs containing a block of previously-aired programming in the area under
consideration. Members of proposal evaluation committees
might listen to demos of proposed new shows.
Committees would also be provided with guidelines, priorities and criteria
for evaluation developed by the program council. Members of the new program
committees would have the responsibility to outreach to and solicit
programming proposals from pertinent communities, activists and experts.
Requirements for serving on such a committee include familiarity with and
commitment to the Pacifica Mission Statement. Previous volunteer experience
with KPFK, expertise or community involvement in the area under
consideration, would also be valuable.
The Program Council will be selecting a number of members for each
committee from among those who nominate themselves, and may also recruit
other additional members.
Deadline for the application to be in the hands of the Program Council is
Monday, May 22. Committees would convene in June and serve through August.
The Program Council itself has a mandated diversity requirement of at least
50% women, and at least 50% people of color, which we would maintain for
the committees as well. We are also particularly interested in the
participation, input and proposals of younger listeners, as the station
places a high priority on meeting the needs and airing the voices of young
people.
