What's a better deal than joining the Marines?
.This is forwarded from [EMAIL PROTECTED] [yahoo.com]. Please direct replies
there. EK
.I'm distributing this message widely, because it seems like an important issue
re recruiting.
.My nephew signed up to join the Marines a few months ago. He graduates from
high school soon and is supposed to join in July, I think. I emailed him before
to mention that signing up doesn't obligate anyone until they take the oath of
enlistment. Lately I sent an email saying the U.S. has murdered 100,000
innocent people in Iraq, mostly women and kids. I sent links to 2 stories on
the net about that and I asked if he supports that. He said he's not joining
the Marine Corps to kill and he definitely does not want to kill anybody, but
he's joining to test himself and do what he wants to do [become a lawyer]: he
said he's going into Legal Studies, not infantry, and he's hoping he won't get
shipped to Iraq with his MOS[?]. He hopes to take College classes while in the
Marines and have enough money from military pay and benefits to go to Law
School, when he gets out. He thinks becoming a lawyer is well worth joining the
Marines, despite the dangers.
.He didn't say anything about wanting free trips to see the world, but that may
be part of the appeal too. The testing of his "manhood," or maybe the enforced
physical discipline, seems to be the main appeal for him, with the college
benefits being next.
.I plan to try to get across the idea that being part of a murderous enterprise
would make him partly responsible for the murders. But appeals to morality, if
not clearly explained, may not have much influence on him.
.So there are 5 things I can use help with.
-1. What is a clear explanation of the fact that anyone knowingly involved in
an immoral enterprise is guilty of the same immoral actions, or the specific
fact that anyone involved in the immoral war in Iraq is guilty of murder?
-2. What's a better way for a young man to prove his manhood, or be subjected
to enforced physical discipline?
-3. What's a better way to see the world for free, or cheaply?
-4. What's a better way to do Legal Studies in preparation for law school, than
in the Marines or military?
-5. Are there any military folks who can tell him how realistic his recruiters'
claims are about the benefits of the military?
.Thanks much for any replies [to this email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <yahoo.com>]!
