FEDERAL JUDGE DELIVERS SWEEPING VICTORY TO L.A. 8 MEMBER; REJECTS GOVERNMENT'S ACCUSATIONS; CITIZENSHIP WILL BE AWARDED by don white Los Angeles - June 22, 2006 Following a three day trial in downtown Los Angeles, U.S. Federal Judge Stephen Wilson today issued a sweeping victory to Aiad Barakat of the LA 8, declaring that Barakat successfully defended himself against the three government accusations against him. Judge Wilson's ruling was on the narrow issue of whether Barakat lied during interviews around his pending citizenship application. The ruling did not affect directly other L.A. members, whose home was invaded in the 1980's, but some observers feel the ruling will indirectly help other L.A. 8 members. Supporters in the courtroom erupted in a "silent celebration" following the ruling, with hugs and "high fives" but they respected Judge Wilson's pre-verdict call for decorum in the courtroom. Barakat received warms congratulations from scores of courtroom observers, some in tears. His legal team, a highly respected group of human and civil rights attorneys, were also congratulated warmly. Judge Wilson, before announcing his decision, analyzed all three key accusations by the U.S. government and, one-by-one, found in favor of petitioner. By the third item, the courtroom was showing a sense of enthusiasm for what was coming.
