Noonan Friday, September 22, 2006 HYPERLINK "http://www.thefrontpageonline.com/images/stories/orbituary.gif"Image Henry Siegel, who together with his wife Adele formed a team known around the Westside as aggressive activists for the cause of peace for more than 60 years, died last Monday night. He was 93 years old. While stumping unremittingly for unapologetically liberal causes in the pursuit of peace, Mr. Siegel and Mrs. Siegel attracted wide admiration for their hardiness and for their longevity. He was and she is unrelenting in their political convictions. A familiar sight throughout the community, they made occasional public appearances in recent years, almost always together, at meetings of the City Council and the School Board. From their seats, they would advocate dearly held, peace-based causes. The family can be contacted at 310.838.8513 for the date and details regarding a celebration of Mr. Siegels life. They were married for 69 years, and often had talked about how they were looking forward to their landmark 70th. With Mrs. Siegel taking the lead, they bookmarked their entry into the new world of political activism with the period that they moved into their lifetime home on Braddock Drive. This was in the middle 1940s, near the end of World War II. Friends said that Mr. Siegel, the more taciturn partner, seemed more comfortable taking a role slightly deeper in the background. A Life in Search of a Category Mr. Siegels widely varied and lengthy life was difficult to confine to a single, even overarching, category. Born in Baltimore on Dec. 7, 1912, he was the youngest of 8 children. For that reason, Mr. Siegel sometimes was known as Henry VIII. It was easy enough for friends and family to recall that Mr. Siegel served with the U.S. Navy. But when younger persons or new friends would ask Mr. Siegel what he did for a living before retiring many years ago, he was not certain how to respond. By the familys count, he held more than 40 different jobs. A man of diverse interests, Mr. Siegels twin passions were peace and social justice. Mrs. Siegel described her husband as a loving and devoted father. His nimble mind and his roaming, rubbery imagination combined to teach him how to build creative playthings for his children and grandchildren. Mrs. Siegel said that her husbands ingenuity enabled him to fix just about anything. He was self-educated. He was an avid reader. He developed a twinkling sense of humor. Mrs. Siegel would say that Henry had the right word for every occasion. He enjoyed the outdoors with his family hiking, camping and water sports. Most of all, Mr. Siegels widow remembers that he had a joyful and a positive perspective on life. Postscript In addition to his widow Adele, Mr. Siegel is survived by his 4 children, Sandy Siegel, Roberta Osgood, Irene Siegel and Lenny Siegel, 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren, with a third on the way. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ari Noonan has written such a wonderful article about Henry Segal. Henry was such a good man. He was friendly, humorous, aware and always very kind. Together with Adele, they were such a inspirational team. I got to know them through our mutual support of Gary Silbiger, who is now the mayor of Culver City, and through their work with Peace Guides.
