October 24, 2006 - Humane Society Says NO on 90 Don't Take the Bait: Vote No on Prop. 90!
There's a deceptive ballot measure on your ballot in California this year. It's Proposition 90, and on behalf of The Humane Society of the United States, I am urging you to vote "No" on Prop. 90. Prop. 90 is an extreme measure that will cost taxpayers billions of dollars and hurt our ability to protect the environment and California wildlife. Out-of-state developers are pushing Proposition 90 and they want voters to believe the measure is simply about eminent domain reform. But the truth is that Prop. 90 goes well beyond eminent domain reform and contains far-reaching provisions that will jeopardize the preservation of California's unique and irreplaceable wildlife. Proposition 90 contains sweeping provisions that allow property owners, developers, or others to sue any time a new law or regulation has been passed that they claim has devalued their property. These provisions directly impact the protection of California's most threatened wildlife. For instance: Under Prop. 90, any new or expanded protections of endangered or threatened wildlife could trigger payouts to those who claim they suffered economic loss. For instance, future actions to prevent oil spills or the use of gill nets to protect the California Sea Otter could trigger huge compensation claims by fisheries that claim an "economic loss." Taxpayer groups warn Prop. 90 will drive up taxpayer costs by billions each year; conservation groups warn Prop. 90 will erode environmental protections like those that protect our coastline, preserve open space, and limit undesirable development; educators, law enforcement and local governments say Prop. 90's new payouts and frivolous lawsuits will reduce funding for schools, public safety, health care and other services; business leaders warn Prop 90 will harm our state's economy by slowing project approvals and curtailing infrastructure development. Please vote NO on 90 this Election Day Sincerely, Wayne Pacelle President & CEO The Humane Society of the United States [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digest: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Help: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive1: <http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive2: <http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yahoo!
