The Associated Student Council and the Committee on Diversity and Equity at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus will host an international conference on immigrant rights, to take place on December 9 in Rodney Auditorium, 720 Heber Avenue in Calexico. Proposed legislation against undocumented immigrants, e.g. HR 4437 (the Sensenbrenner bill), S 6411 (the Hagel-Martinez compromise bill) and, most recently, the Border Fence Act, have spurred supporters of immigrant and human rights to organize the most massive movement in our nations history. At the forthcoming conference, a broad spectrum of organizations and individuals from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico bordere.g. the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA), the Mexicali-based Ricardo Flores Magón Border Committee in Defense of Human Rights, etc.will attempt to outline a unified strategy to defend the civil and human rights of undocumented workers and their families everywhere, but with particular focus on those living in the U.S. Speakers will include such noted figures as Nativo Lopez, national president, MAPA; Mike Davis, author and professor at the University of California, Irvine; representatives of labor and social movements in Mexico, etc. Admission to the conference will be free and open to the public.
