a message and invite from our friends inside and outside the newsroom...please pass it on and join this show of support for and with them on Wed 12/6 at noon- de la Guerra Plaza [they'll be walking onto State St and around the block from there] details below: To: Our Friends From: The Organized Newsroom Staff Re: Invite to Santa Barbara News-Press Protest Join the organized News-Press newsroom employees in a MARCH AROUND THE NEWS-PRESS BLOCK When: Noon to 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6 Where: Meet in De la Guerra Plaza in front of the Santa Barbara News- Press. We will walk out of the plaza to State Street and around the block. Back in the plaza, several speakers will provide updates on our demands. *****Feel free to forward this invitation to friends, neighbors, co-workers, group lists and blogs********* Please join our lunchtime march against Wendy McCaw, the owner and co-publisher of the Santa Barbara News-Press on Wednesday, Dec. 6. We demand that she BUILD BACK THE WALL between opinion and news. McCaw must STOP ATTACKING THE NEWSROOM. For five months, the newsroom staff has been working in an atmosphere of intimidation and betrayal, and 30 journalists have been forced out or fired. Most recently, McCaw fired Senior Writer Melinda Burns, a 21-year veteran at the paper and a respected journalist with a large community following. Nearly 700 people have signed an online petition for her reinstatement, and we join them in their demands. McCaw must BRING BACK MELINDA BURNS. Finally, we demand that McCaw START NEGOTIATING A FAIR EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT with us. Our first priority is to restore journalistic integrity to a sadly diminished newspaper. Two months ago, we voted 33-6 to join the Teamsters, but McCaw is challenging the results. Meanwhile, she has illegally silenced her employees with gag orders, and she fired Burns, a leader in the union campaign. McCaw must OBEY THE LAW. We are proud to have been named Local Heroes by the Santa Barbara Independent last week. Please join our protest on Wednesday. Help us restore freedom of the press at your hometown newspaper. Thomas M. Storke, the Pulitzer Prize-winning former publisher, swore to report the news "without fear or favor of friend or foe." McCaw has broken that promise.
