You made me curious about the meaning of the song so I googled
it. Wikipedia's article
(<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne>) says a bit about it:

" 'Auld Lang Syne' is a poem by Robert Burns, although a similar poem
by Robert Ayton (1570-1638), as well as older folk songs, use the
same phrase, and may well have inspired Burns. // [...] The song's
name is in Scots, and may be translated literally as 'old long
since', or more idiomatically 'long ago', or 'days gone by'. In his
retelling of fairy tales in the Scots language, Matthew Fitt uses the
phrase 'In the days of auld lang syne' as the equivalent of 'Once
upon a time'. // [...]"

There's a lot of history and customs as well as the full lyrics of
the poem recounted in the Wikipedia article. There's also other
information that comes up with a Google search, some of which may
expand or clash with the Wikipedia information.

Happy New Year,
...uncledon.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
And here's a hand, my trusty friend
And gie's a hand o' thine
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne
