ABOUT THE FILM:
Prizewinner at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival,
"WHY WE FIGHT" pierces the veneer of nationalist
rationalizations and patriotic loyalties, taking
an unflinching look at the anatomy of American
war making. Exposing the political, economic, and
ideological forces driving America to fight
against an ever-changing enemy, this hard-hitting
documentary asks how -- and answers why -- a
nation supposed to be "of, by, and for the
people" actually functions as the
savings-and-loan of a system whose survival
depends on a state of constant war. Inspired by
President Eisenhower's 1961 Farewell Address
(warning Americans of the mounting dangers of the
"military-industrial complex"), filmmaker Eugene
Jarecki explores a half-century of U.S. foreign
policy from World War II to the Iraq War. Weaving
together unforgettable stories of everyday
Americans touched by a war, with commentary by a
"who's who" of military and Washington insiders,
"WHY WE FIGHT" reveals many ways in which
political and corporate interests are alarmingly
entangled in America's business of war. Featuring
John McCain, Gore Vidal, Richard Perle, Dan
Rather, Karen Kwiatkowski, the Eisenhower family,
and others, "WHY WE FIGHT" paints a compelling
portrait of a nation relentlessly pursuing its
deadly trajectory towards an increasingly
imperial and imperiled future. In the face of
current government efforts to escalate U.S.
military aggression in Iraq and elsewhere --
despite Americans' overwhelming opposition to
this war -- this award-winning film speaks to why
the U.S. keeps fighting, and why we must stop that fighting now!
