29, to gather items relating to South L.A. in the 1980s. More information is
below, so please scroll.
We also invite you to come to the Library Saturday, March 24, for a work day on
our community natives garden. More info is also below.

The Library is working with noted artists Gary Phillips and Steven Walters on
South Central Blues (working title), a graphic novel about South L.A. in the
1980s. South Central Blues will tell the story of four friends, Billy, Frentis,
Angela, and Javier, and their families, who live in South L.A. in the 1980s.
The story begins in the Fall of 1983 when the four young people are sophomores
at Manual Arts High School and follow their lives over the next several years
as they graduate from high school and move into adulthood.
Their journey will be framed against a backdrop of the loss of manufacturing
jobs, disinvestment by government, the influx of crack, and community efforts
to address these issues.
The graphic novel will be an innovative and creative way for youth, their
families, teachers, residents, and local organizations to deepen our
understanding of the underlying causes and complexity of violence and conflict
in our communities so we can address historical forces and systemic root causes.
The Collection Day will give the graphic artist ideas and guidance about South
L.A. in the 1980s-day-to-day life, history, people, culture, struggles, and
celebrations and will help the graphic novel to truly represent the community
of South L.A.
Items (or reproductions, if you want the original item returned) will become
part of the Library's permanent collections and enrich our understanding of our
community's history. Drop your item(s) off at the Library on or before
Thursday, March 29. We appreciate your contribution!

GARDEN WORKDAY
Honoring Our Roots;
Transforming Community with Natives
This garden of California Natives created through a partnership between CSU,
the SCL and LA City's Beautification Program. It was planned during a series
of workshops held at the library last year and created through a series of
community workdays. This work began almost a year ago, the opening was held
last November and we invite you now to come and see how the garden is doing and
help figure out an carry out the next steps.
