ICUJP Announcements Interfaith Communities United for Justice & Peace Education, Action & Witness: Love and Justice Bring Us Together Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace Presents KATRINA AND THE WAR: Survival and Struggle from Baghdad to New Orleans Speaker Rev. Dr. James Lawson Monday, August 27th - 7:00 9:30 pm Holman United Methodist Church 3320 W Adams Blvd., Los Angeles Free on-site parking and light refreshments Rev. Dr. James Lawson Civil Rights Leader and Minister Emeritus of Holman United Methodist Church Discussion Moderated by Tom and Jan Honoré: Katrina and the War Testimonies from Katrina survivors and their allies in rebuilding the cities New Orleans-style Jazz "We deplore the diversion of resources from the rebuilding of New Orleans homes to the illegal and immoral wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Dr. Bonnie Blustein, a member of the ICUJP Board and an organizer of the program, "Big corporations are profiting from these disasters at the expense of long-time residents and immigrant workers." The program will contrast the valor of the many "everyday heroes" who led rescue and rebuilding efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi with the negligence and inaction of federal, state, and local authorities. It will address the possibility of impeachment or other means to hold these officials accountable for their role in the disaster. Katrina and the War will be moderated by ICUJP members and Louisiana natives Tom and Jan Honore. "We need to remember what Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior taught us," said Mr. Honore, who is a board member of ICUJP and of the Catholic peace and justice group Call To Action USA. "King said that 'When profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered." James Lawson, a key figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, was dubbed "the leading non-violence theorist in the world" by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He has recently returned to Los Angeles after serving as a Distinguished University Professor at Vanderbilt University for the 2006-07 academic year. Lawson served as pastor of Holman United Methodist Church for 25 years before retiring in 1999. "We as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered." -- Rev.
