Synopsis: "Modern Heroes, Modern Slaves" depicts the struggles of women from the Philippines as they find ways to support their families by seeking jobs overseas in more prosperous countries. Because the country's economy is dependent on the revenue from these overseas filipino workers, they have been called, "modern day heroes" by the Philippine government. However, due to the fear of losing revenue, the government is reluctant to interfere with foreign governments if a worker were to experience human rights violations. This leaves many filipino workers vulnerable to exploitation, physical abuse, and even family/marriage break-ups. Starting with the case of Flor Contemplacion who was accused and hanged for killing her abusive employer, this documentary unravels the many tragic sides of organized labor trade, including workers who have arrived back to their homeland in coffins.
