Friends,

In our ongoing search for good writers to report on topics important for
this community, we're happy to report that Carl Matthes has begun
writing a regular column for the LA Progressive
<http://www.laprogressive.com/> . He brings a lifetime of involvement
with gay rights issues in Los Angeles to our pages. See his "How Do You
Spell Oppression?"
<http://www.laprogressive.com/2008/07/24/how-do-you-spell-oppression/>
in this issue.

Also coming onboard this week is John MacMurray, candidate for the
California Assembly from the 72nd District. This week, he writes about
the state's budget crunch and its affect on public education -- John's a
high school teacher in Fullerton -- in "The Gift That Keeps on Giving."
<http://www.laprogressive.com/2008/07/22/the-gift-that-keeps-on-giving/>
Next week, John writes about our first black president -- and it's not
who you think it is.

Robert Reich, former Clinton Secretary of Labor, also graciously let us
reprint his thoughts. See "A Short Primer on McCainomics Versus
Obamanomics: Top-Down or Bottom-Up"
<http://www.laprogressive.com/2008/07/23/a-short-primer-on-mccainomics-v\
ersus-obamanomics-top-down-or-bottom-up/>  in this issue.

Please let these new additions to our writing stable know what you think
of their contributions. Same goes for our old hands. Please also
consider writing for us yourself.

As we reported recently
<http://www.laprogressive.com/2008/07/13/a-watershed-election-year/> ,
we're putting on our first fundraiser in August, for Superior Court
candidates Cynthia Loo and Lori-Ann Jones. We haven't yet decided
whether our house will hold such an event or whether we'd be better off
in a nearby restaurant. Please contact us if you'd like to help put it
on or might be willing to attend. If all goes well with this first
effort, we might host other fundraisers -- such as for our local
Democratic Club or for other candidates and causes -- in this election
season.
