Urgent Action Needed! This afternoon, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called for legislative leaders to put aside their partisan ideology and come to consensus on a budget that includes a mix of revenue increases and cuts in services. The Governor has proposed a "compromise budget" that includes a temporary 1-cent sales tax increase and $2 billion more in cuts than the Conference Committee budget had included. In these $2 billion in cuts are an extension of the 10% cut to Medi-Cal providers, hospitals, California Children's Services (healthcare for severely disabled children), and the Child Health and Disability Prevention Program, which provides free periodic check-ups for low-income children and is often the only preventive healthcare poor children can get. We urge you to call the Governor and the Assembly Republican Leader, Mike Villines, to let them know we need a budget and that more cuts will not solve it. Call them and tell them: "My name is _____________ and I work for ________. I respect the Governor's and legislative leaders' work to pass a budget, especially the Governor's willingness to show leadership in compromise. However, we are worried that further cuts to healthcare will only hurt the healthcare safety net we've worked so hard to build. Please support a more balanced stream of revenues that do not include further cuts to healthcare."
