Last June a panel of experts was appointed to advise the UN Secretary-General on accountability issues in Sri Lanka. A few days ago they presented Ban Ki Moon with a report of their findings, immediately provoking the Sri Lankan government to dismiss the report as 'fundamentally flawed'. Along with the reports from the prominent human rights organizations, we hope that this UN report is a precursor to an international investigation into allegations of war crimes committed by both sides during the final stages of the war. Whilst we welcome the UNSG's office saying the panel's report will be made public, we are dismayed that the Sri Lankan government will be given prior access to the report - enabling them to prepare their own response to coincide with the release. Help us put pressure on Ban Ki Moon to release the report NOW by signing this petition. Name: Email: (If you would prefer to send your own message, you are free to edit this) Dear Secretary-General, All of us who follow the situation in Sri Lanka are waiting anxiously to know what the Panel you appointed to advise you on accountability for war crimes has reported and recommended. We were therefore delighted to hear that you intend to make their report public - but only after sharing it with the Sri Lankan government. It is deeply unfair to give this government the opportunity to use its exclusive knowledge of the reports contents to leak or spin them for its own purposes ahead of and in parallel to the official launch. Indeed, this has already started to happen. We therefore strongly urge you to take immediate remedial action and release the report NOW, with or without your own commentary and interpretation. To do anything less is to further humiliate and oppress the hundreds of thousands of civilians who have been harmed by this war and - quite reasonably - had expectations that at least this expert review process would be handled fairly. The selective release - which can only harm the prospects for action - is especially disrespectful of the very brave individuals who responded to call for evidence from the experts. It is for all these reasons that we implore you to release the report to the wider public NOW. When you submit this form, the email will go to Ban Ki-Moon at the UN and your email address will be stored on our system. Your name and email address will be kept private and not passed to anyone else.
