Subject: [DopeXResistance-L.A.] May 13 Day of Emergency for Education
rally in Pershing Square -- school's out!

Print flyer at: http://www.utla.net/system/files/may13shortday.pdf

Friday the 13th is now a "State of Emergency" shortened day! In
response to UTLA's planned one-hour protest on May 13, LAUSD has
agreed to declare May 13 a shortened day. UTLA members will be
allowed to leave campus when the students do, without loss of pay or
other consequences, to protest state budget cuts.

This unprecedented shortened day for protesting will allow UTLA
members to cap the "State of Emergency" week of action by picketing
with parents after school and then traveling together to Pershing
Square for the statewide rally. It also means that our protest will
not interfere with student testing on May 13. (Superintendent Deasy
will be issuing a directive to all administrators about the shortened
day, stating that UTLA members are allowed to leave campus when students do.)

The shortened day in no way affects ongoing negotiations with LAUSD
about the best possible way to save jobs and stop class-size
increases. Future negotiations are scheduled for May 3, 5, 12, 17, 25, and 26.

May 9-13: "Education Can't Wait for the Kids of Our State"

May 9-13 has been declared "State of Emergency" week by California
teachers to pressure legislators to pass tax extensions to prevent
deeper cuts. The tax extensions would save the jobs of thousands of
RIF'd members, stop class-size increases for our students, and reduce
the pressure on our members to accept furlough days. UTLA will be
holding the following local actions to show that "Education Can't
Wait for the Kids of Our State":

MAY 9: Area drops for materials. More info to come.

MAY 10: Before-school parent leafleting to encourage participation in
May 13 picketing at your site and Pershing Square Rally.

MAY 13: Shortened day for protesting

- At School: Once students are dismissed, UTLA members and parents
will picket in front of school, culminating in a school site
mini-rally and then a group carpool/mass transit trip to Pershing Square.

- Pershing Square: UTLA members will join thousands of teachers,
parents, and others from school districts across Southern California
to demand tax extensions to save public education and other crucial
services. The rally will be one of five mass events statewide
coinciding with the occupation by teachers of the state Capitol in
Sacramento. Music and rally begin at 4 p.m.
