LA General Strike Meeting & Some General Strikes Over Last Century
December 18th, 2011
A committee to explore a General Strike for May Day 2012, as part of Occupy LA
met Sunday Dec. 18. from 11 am to 2 pm. There will be subcommittee meetings on
Tuesday night after Christmas and New Years, at 7:30 in room 9 of the La
Placita - Our Lady Queen of Angels Church across from Union Station in LA.
There will be a general meeting for anyone interested in the General Strike on
Jan. 7th, at 2 PM at a location to be determined.

Subcommittees were formed on Outreach, Labor Outreach, Student Outreach, Media
Outreach, Logistics and Demands were put off until we get a better idea as to
what other people want. One committee was formed for researching General
Strikes.

There was a rather heated discussion of whether to include anti-imperialism as
part of the general statement. It was watered down to "peace" as a temporary
expedient. One guy says Americans need to be tricked, others disagree, one
insists on stronger words. Most of us didn't want to argue over the subject.

Another dispute occurred over the term `immigrant rights' vs. `migration
reform,' we agreed on immigrant rights.

There was some discussion as to the nature of a general strike, some called it
a political action others called it an economic action. There was no agreement
although I proposed we call it "political economy." I mentioned that the
general strikes of 1934 and 1946 were economic to begin with. Someone else
stated that in 2006 the General Strike was political. Another person brought up
the fact that that was in response to the threat of deportation from a specific
law, it was a response to that law. It was not political in a general sense of
striking for general ideals. Another person said that the Strike in San
Francisco and Minneapolis in 1934 were both economic actions, for the right to
form unions and to protest police breaking up a picket line. Another person
mentioned that there was an organized unemployed workers movement in the
1930's. Someone else brought up the fact that in 1946 the Oakland strike became
a street party with jukeboxes in the street and beer being the only thing
served because all the other businesses were closed. I noted that we need to
have specific demands that relate to bread and butter issues that affect all
people. Another person contradicted that saying that he thought people could be
inspired by political goals. The end result we agreed to do further research
but the General Assembly of LA had authorized a General Strike after the Occupy
the Ports, as a next step.

There was more discussion about formal structure of the committee and meeting
times. A lot of talk was about the outreach, and the decision was for everyone
to reach out to their respective communities and report back. A final decision
on the Strike Aims might be ready by the Jan. 7 meeting, but someone said the
unions would not be ready by then. Others said the union leaderships will be
opposed to the General Strike. But then they were opposed to shutting down the
port.
