This documentary is the result of the edition of a series of film archives
consisting of more than 1,000 programs - about 17,000 hours of footage –
recorded by Vive, a Venezuelan public TV station. This documentary was shot
between 2003 and 2011, when we followed several collectives and
organizations in a process of mutual learning and coexistence.
This is a film with no script, no make-up and no set design. They are the
Portraits of the Struggle of thousands of men and women who have been able
to revolutionize their lives, as well as the whole continent.
“As the sun rises, so does the Revolution”

These Portraits of the Struggle offers a thoughtful and earnest look
regarding the learning experiences and the struggles launched by organized
collectives. This documentary is an audiovisual log comprising the last
seven years of the Bolivarian process in Venezuela.
The access to land, drinking water, better working conditions at factories,
as well as many other struggles of equal importance comprise part of the
battle being fought every day. It’s a battle against indifference, against
a past filled with misery, against landowners and masters, against red tape
and “heartless officials”. Every stage exposed in this documentary
highlights that the sky is the limit when individual willpowers unite in
order to become one voice. These portraits represent the bridges between
communities and institutions, which work in solidarity in order to improve
the living conditions of those traditionally disenfranchised and
marginalized.
Witness how by using the power of assembly, in public or secret places, at
meetings, in the communities, factories and the countryside gave birth to
urban land committees, worker´s self-managed factories, technical
committees on water resources, communal councils, and cooperative
movements, as well as the growth of the peasants’ struggle.
“I dreamed that my shack was like a flower,” they said. They also explained
how – from their community spaces – they were able to turn a past filled
with shortages and plundering into a noteworthy present, built from the
grassroots up and by means of people’s power
