Statement of the Workers' Party
Our people and the revolutionary and progressive forces have learned with great dismay about the murder of our comrade Chokri Belaid, general secretary of the Unified Movement of Democratic Patriots and one of the leaders of the Popular Front. The Workers' Party, saddened by this great loss, send its condolences to the Unified Movement of Patriotic Democrats as well as all the Tunisian people who lost a revolutionary leader, a man of integrity and true to its principles, in a crucial period of history of Tunisia and its revolution. The Workers' Party: - Request the opening of an investigation independent of the Ministries of Interior and Justice to find the culprit of this heinous crime as soon as possible. - Reiterates its call to observe the general strike called for Friday, February 8, 2013 and to ensure its success. It also invites all Tunisians to attend the state funeral of the martyr of the people and the revolution, and to participate massively popular movements to maintain the objectives of the revolution. - Attributes any responsibility for the violence to the government, complicit in its passivity in the face of banditry and violence against several political parties, organizations, personalities and cultural and religious symbols, perpetrated by armed groups and militias under legal cover, above all by the League for the Protection of the Revolution, which operate openly and with impunity faced with the silence of the authorities. Indeed, the government is responsible for this atmosphere of violence, the Presidency and the Constituent Assembly which turned against the principles and objectives of its election, are equally complicit. The Ennahdha Party in power, the majority party in the Constituent Assembly and the government also bears the political responsibility by supporting these groups and especially by a fascist speech and repression adopted by its historic leader and some other leaders. - Requests the immediate departure of the government whose mission was doomed to failure and the formation of a government of independents to take over and complete the transition to democracy. - Calls on all political forces and civil society to form a national front of salvation to replace the incompetent government by a national government that will guarantee the drafting of the constitution and the holding of free and fair elections as soon as possible. - Calls on the Tunisian people to be vigilant and be prepared to complete its revolution.
