Coach_
(http://www.local15tv.com/news/local/story/UM-Coach-Bomb-Sniffing-Dogs-Spotters-on-Roofs/BrirjAzFPUKKN8z6eSDJEA.cspx)
  15 Apr 2013 University of
Mobile's Cross Country Coach, who was near the finish line of the Boston
Marathon when a series of explosions went off, said he thought it was odd
there
were bomb sniffing dogs at the start and finish lines. "They kept making
announcements to the participants do not worry, it's just a training
exercise," Coach Ali Stevenson _told_
(http://www.local15tv.com/mediacenter/local.aspx?videoid=4018846) Local 15.
Stevenson said he saw law enforcement
spotters on the roofs at the start of the race. He's been in plenty of
marathons
in Chicago, D.C., Chicago, London and other major metropolitan areas but has
never seen that level of security before. "Evidently, I don't believe
they were just having a training exercise," Stevenson said. "I think they must
have had some sort of threat or suspicion called in."

_'Marathon as Dry-Run Disaster'_
(http://belfercenter.hks.harvard.edu/publication/18211/marathon_as_dryrun_disaster.html)
  21 Apr 2008 Today thousands
of runners and hundreds of thousands of spectators are unwittingly taking
part in a planned disaster. Yet, they are not just safe from harm (except
for the variety brought on by running 26.2 miles), they also are participants
in an event that will make the citizens of Greater Boston safer in case of
a natural catastrophe or terrorist attack. Primary responsibility for the
health and well-being of both runners and spectators in Boston rests with
Boston Emergency Medical Service (BEMS), along with the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health and Emergency Management Agency. According to BEMS
chief Richard Serino, his department considers events like the marathon and
the Fourth of July celebration as "planned disasters" - safe, controlled
environments that present "an opportunity to test some things you would never
want to test in a real disaster." ...Massachusetts is better prepared for a
real disaster because every Patriot's Day and Fourth of July is treated as
a "disaster."

_Boston runners were warned: Squamish man_
(http://www.squamishchief.com/article/20130415/SQUAMISH0101/130419985/-1/squamish/boston-runners-were-warned
-squamish-man) 15 Apr 2013 (British Columbia) Runners getting set to take
part in the Boston Marathon were warned beforehand that they were going to
die, said a Squamish resident who took part in the race. Three people were
killed and more than 140 were injured when two bombs exploded near the
finish line of the famed 42.2-kilometre running event on Monday (April 15).
Mike Heiliger, 59, said a woman holding several bags was telling runners who
were picking up their pre-race packages in downtown Boston on Saturday
(April 13) that they were going to die if they participated in the event.

gh_alert) 16 Apr 2013 In New York City, the New York Police Department
immediately beefed up security at major attractions, hotels and high-traffic
spots yesterday. "We're stepping up security at hotels and other prominent
locations in the city through deployment of the NYPD's critical response
vehicles until more about the explosion is learned," NYPD spokesman Paul
Browne said. After cops were briefed by NYPD counterterror officials about
"what the concerns were in Boston, what to look for here," Browne said,
critical response vehicles swarmed Times Square, the Empire State Building and
Radio City Music Hall. Up to 100 cops cars rallied at one point in Times
Square.

--Governor Deval Patrick 16 Apr 2013 Boston will be largely open for business
on Tuesday, but so much will be different, as a wounded city awakens to
higher security and heightened vigilance following the deadly bombings at the
Boston Marathon. Heavily armed police will be out in force. Bags will be
searched on the MBTA. And the area around Copley Square will remain a
crime scene, closed to the public. Not since the Sept. 11 attacks has Boston
witnessed such a show of martial power coupled with a sense of
vulnerability and grief. The scores of rifle-wielding state troopers, National
Guard
members in fatigues, and municipal SWAT teams who descended on the city
Monday will continue to patrol on Tuesday, particularly around the finish line
of the marathon in the Back Bay.

killing at least three people and hospitalizing at least 128. Last night's
NHL game in Boston, where the Bruins were to host the Ottawa Senators, was
postponed. The NBA canceled tonight’s Indiana at Boston game.

Apr 2013 The bombs that exploded near the finish line at the Boston
Marathon Monday are considered a terrorist attack by several Capitol Hill
lawmakers, even as President Obama refrained using that description earlier in
the
day. "I think it has all the hallmarks of an act of terrorism," House
Homeland Security Committee chairman Mike McCaul, R-Texas, said. "Multiple
bombings simultaneously. A mass casualty event - spectacular event - that's
what
they always try to focus and target. So, to me, it's got all the hallmarks
of that and I believe that it is and the only remaining issue is who are
the perpetrators and what's the motivation behind it."
